Block leverages OpenAI tech to revolutionize cybersecurity operations
Block, the parent company of Square, Cash App, and Afterpay, is integrating OpenAI’s Daybreak technology to enhance its cybersecurity capabilities. The AI-powered system accelerates vulnerability detection and response, reducing tasks that once took weeks to mere hours.
James Nettesheim, Chief Information Security Officer, highlights that the technology acts as a scalable teammate, enabling teams to handle complex, ambiguous problems efficiently. Block’s security team now completes projects in a fraction of the time, with human validation ensuring accuracy.
For instance, replaying a proposed detection change against seven months of telemetry takes under an hour, a task that previously required manual requerying of hundreds of cases. The system also supports autonomous hunting and deep investigations, completing approximately 1,100 analyst-hours of work per quarter.
Nettesheim emphasizes that while AI handles much of the workload, human oversight remains critical for context and strategy, ensuring responsible adoption of the technology.
