Bond market tightens focus on ai-related risks
The corporate bond market is growing more selective in financing AI-related projects and companies, as investors scrutinize risks more closely. Bond yields rose for companies linked to CoreWeave, a heavily indebted AI firm, following a sharp decline in its bond prices earlier this month. CoreWeave's unsecured bonds reached yields of around 16% two weeks ago, impacting related entities such as Edged Compute, Core Scientific, and Applied Digital, which issue bonds for data centers leased by CoreWeave. Citigroup analysts noted that tenant-specific risks were exposed during the October selloff, with CoreWeave and its associated data centers facing significant pressure. They warned that data center bonds are vulnerable to tenant default risks and can reprice quickly as those risks increase. Analysts expect continued differentiation in the market as investors refine their assessments of AI spending outcomes.
The bond market's heightened caution reflects its role in determining borrowing costs, with investors increasingly wary of the financial risks tied to AI investments.
