On August 30, 2026, telecom executives in the UK warned that the slow pace of 5G upgrades could put the country at a disadvantage in the global AI race. According to a report by The Guardian, the UK's telecom infrastructure is lagging behind other nations, which could hinder its ability to support the growing demand for data from AI applications. The current focus of AI infrastructure is on data centers, but expanding broadband and mobile networks is essential for handling the massive data traffic from consumers and businesses.
Consumer advocacy group Which? reported that the UK's mobile network coverage is worse than 27 EU countries and G7 members, ranking it 57th globally in network performance and 70th in download speeds. Andrea Donà, head of VodafoneThree, criticized the current state of the network, stating that it does not meet the standards needed for AI applications. He expressed shame over the quality of service and called for urgent improvements to match the standards of providers like EE and O2.
Another industry executive warned that while AI and connectivity are still in early stages, the pace of 5G deployment could mirror past issues with fiber-optic expansion, ultimately affecting the UK's global competitiveness.
