Canadian AI researcher David Krueger, an assistant professor at the University of Montreal and a member of Mila, the Quebec Institute of Artificial Intelligence, has called for an indefinite pause in the development of cutting-edge artificial intelligence. Krueger argues that merely slowing down AI development is insufficient to prevent an apocalyptic scenario and that a complete halt is necessary to avoid human extinction. His research focuses on reducing the risk of human extinction caused by AI. Krueger acknowledged the recent call by Anthropic's CEO Dario Amodei for AI companies to slow their development pace, which was supported by Sam Altman of OpenAI and Elon Musk of SpaceX. However, he criticized the proposed measures as inadequate and too slow. Amodei advocated for regulation, international cooperation, and third-party evaluators to verify AI safety measures. Krueger, founder of the nonprofit Evitable, expressed concerns that current AI testing methods are unreliable and that the proposed plan lacks sufficient strength.
