On September 4, 2026, IT Home reported that China-led international standardization efforts for AI applications in smart cities have been successfully launched by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO). The standard, titled 'Sustainable Development of Cities and Communities - Artificial Intelligence Applications in Smart City Operations - Part 2: Principles and Elements,' aims to establish a comprehensive governance framework for AI in urban management, addressing key areas such as governance systems, implementation strategies, collaboration mechanisms, and performance evaluation.
The standard will be developed collaboratively by experts from 16 countries, including the United States, the United Kingdom, France, the United Arab Emirates, Singapore, Malaysia, Brazil, and Iran. It focuses on data governance and resource coordination to foster an inclusive, transparent, and accountable AI governance model for cities.
