X reported that approximately 200 accounts linked to a suspected Chinese bot farm have been actively trying to sway American public opinion against AI data centers on social media. The U.S. and China are in a fierce competition to develop the most advanced AI systems, and this incident highlights how Chinese propaganda may be attempting to slow U.S. progress. The X Safety team identified 200,000 accounts, including 200 that were posting in a way that could manipulate debates on American AI and energy policy. Congressional Republicans are investigating foreign influence campaigns aimed at hindering American AI development. OpenAI previously revealed in a June report that it disrupted two Chinese-linked networks using ChatGPT to generate fake content influencing U.S. discussions on AI energy consumption and tech tariffs. Real-world opposition to data centers is also evident, with many people attending local council meetings to protest their construction.
Despite these efforts, the pushback against data centers has become a financial burden for AI expansion. While foreign influence campaigns may play a role, organic resistance remains significant. The situation underscores the complex interplay between national competition, social media manipulation, and public sentiment in shaping the future of AI development.
