At a press conference on September 20, 2026, the State Administration for Market Regulation (SAMR) announced plans to leverage big data and artificial intelligence to regulate online sales and live-streaming commerce during the '14th Five-Year Plan' period. The initiative aims to enhance consumer trust and ensure fair market practices. SAMR's deputy director, Shu Wei, emphasized that protecting consumer rights is crucial for economic growth and market stability. The plan includes stricter enforcement against fraud, price manipulation, and poor customer service, alongside the use of AI to detect illegal activities. Additionally, the bureau will improve consumer dispute resolution mechanisms and expand no-questions-asked return policies. By 2030, SAMR aims to establish over 5,000 consumer-friendly zones nationwide, fostering a trusted consumption environment. The strategy also involves building a national consumer credit system, increasing transparency through complaint data sharing, and monitoring consumer satisfaction metrics. These measures are expected to significantly enhance consumer confidence and market efficiency.
