Colossal Biosciences has unveiled its new AI platform, GenoMorph, designed to expedite research into reviving extinct species. The platform integrates advanced 3D morphology, comparative genomics, and developmental biology to identify target genes for editing in projects with limited genetic data. The company is using it to advance its project to revive the dodo, which has only a single available genome, compared to 100 samples for the mammoth. CEO Ben Lamm explained that the AI learns from bird developmental data and genetic information to predict key genetic variations responsible for the dodo's distinctive features. The platform, developed over a year, has identified around 2,300 potential DNA editing targets for the dodo's cranial and facial structure. Lamm emphasized that while the technology aids in pinpointing genetic modifications, it does not execute edits, ensuring precision and control. Meanwhile, the company announced that its Nicobar pigeon population has reached 36 individuals, with key reproductive cells successfully cultivated. The project has also received support from XPRIZE founder Peter Diamandis, who launched a new investment firm, NeoGenesis Capital, to fund related ventures.
