Concerns rise as spirit airlines' data sale to Google looms
Doug Kreuzkamp, founder of Springshot, expressed alarm after reports indicated Google had won an auction for a significant amount of operational data from Spirit Airlines during its bankruptcy proceedings. Springshot, founded in 2011, developed a proprietary platform used globally by hundreds of airports to enhance airline efficiency and resolve logistics issues. The company powered Spirit’s technology stack for three years, including the airline’s final flight, according to Kreuzkamp. However, Springshot received no notice when Spirit prepared to auction a massive dataset that Kreuzkamp believes likely contains a substantial portion of data and intellectual property owned by his company, not Spirit.
Kreuzkamp claims the dataset may include proprietary information that should not have been part of Spirit’s assets. The situation has sparked concern among industry observers, who are now closely monitoring the potential implications of the data sale for both companies and the broader aviation sector.
