Coxon, sanders and bannon join forces for human-centric AI initiative
Ex-Anthropic researcher Jacob Coxon, Senator Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) and former Trump White House adviser Steve Bannon are set to collaborate at an event on Tuesday, advocating for human-controlled AI. The Future of Life Institute is organizing the event, known as the 'Pro-Human Assembly,' which aims to promote human agency and accountability in AI development. The initiative is linked to 'The Pro-Human AI Declaration,' a call to action for safeguarding human control over AI technologies.
Industry leaders have recently endorsed slowing AI development due to cybersecurity threats and ethical concerns. Randi Weingarten, president of the American Federation of Teachers, emphasized the need for elected officials to prioritize safety over innovation. Megan Garcia, a mother whose son died by suicide after interacting with a chatbot, urged political leaders to address AI's impact on voters ahead of the midterms.
The event will bring together figures from diverse political and cultural backgrounds, highlighting the growing cross-partisan interest in AI governance. While these alliances signal a shift in political dynamics, their impact on actual policy remains uncertain.
