Danu Robotics, based in Edinburgh, Scotland, is developing an AI-driven robot designed to improve recycling efficiency. Founded by Amy Ma, the company's six-year-old project, H.E.R.O., uses a pincer claw instead of a suction system and leverages AI to enhance its sorting capabilities. Danu has secured $500,000 in signed contracts and has letters of interest from two major customers, with over 200 potential clients in its sales pipeline. The company recently raised $5 million in late-seed funding to accelerate its commercial efforts. Ma estimates that a working site with the robot could generate $485,000 in additional revenue annually, compared to a $160,000 initial investment and $24,000 in annual maintenance. Ma believes the robot's efficiency and lower cost will make it a strong contender in the recycling market. Her next goal is to make the robot smaller and more versatile, enabling its use in diverse settings like events and airports. "Once it’s smaller, it can be used as a standalone recycling solution for events, for shopping centers, hospitals, or airports to recycle their waste at the source," Ma told TechCrunch.
