On October 8, 2026, it was reported that Germany's eco-friendly search engine Ecosia has decided to move away from the French AI model Mistral and instead adopt Chinese open-source AI models. Ecosia's founder and CEO, Christian Kroll, stated that Mistral's performance was disappointing, lagging behind competitors by a full year. Earlier this year, Ecosia had switched from OpenAI to Mistral, but faced technical issues such as server overloads. Kroll also expressed concerns about Mistral's alignment with Ecosia's environmental goals, citing France's reliance on nuclear energy and doubts about the model's neutrality. He argued that Chinese efforts in open-source AI present a significant opportunity for Europe, allowing them to leverage powerful models without massive investments. Ecosia is now collaborating with Melious to use models like Qwen, GLM, and Kimi, which have cut costs by half and improved performance. Kroll emphasized that Mistral's dependence on international investors undermines its status as a sovereign entity. He believes that by adopting Chinese models, Ecosia can achieve both cost efficiency and enhanced performance, positioning itself competitively in the evolving AI landscape.
