Elon Musk predicts grok 4.9 could match Astra/Fable, grok 5 might achieve AGI

Elon Musk, CEO of xAI, stated during a recent X platform interaction that Grok 4.7's capabilities are comparable to Anthropic's Opus 5.0 rather than 5.1, with ongoing improvements needed in multimodal performance. He highlighted that Grok 4.8 will bring significant enhancements, while Grok 4.9 could potentially rival OpenAI's Astra (GPT-6) or Anth, and Grok 5 may surpass current capabilities. When asked about the proximity of Grok 4.8 to achieving AGI, Musk replied, 'This will be Grok 5.' Previously, Musk had claimed Grok 4.8, a 2.5-trillion-parameter model trained on a new C++ software stack, would be completed this week.
