Etsy tightens rules against ai-generated content in listings
Etsy has introduced new guidelines to curb the use of AI-generated content in product listings, aiming to enhance transparency and trust. The changes, announced on October 22, prohibit AI-generated patterns, recipes, and other instructions that buyers use to create finished products.
Sellers must now provide real examples of the final product, with at least one unedited photo showing the actual item against a real background. AI-edited images are allowed but must accurately represent the product.
James Ossman, Etsy’s vice president of customer operations, emphasized that AI should support, not replace, sellers’ creativity and craftsmanship. The policy builds on Etsy’s July 2024 update, which allowed AI-generated art with proper disclosure, but now expands restrictions to include AI-generated recipes and patterns.
Enforcement will rely on new technology to detect misleading images and fraudulent listings, with additional tools to help sellers comply. Users have expressed frustration over AI-generated images making it harder to assess product quality, with some abandoning shops that rely heavily on such content.
