EU expands digital regulation to generative AI platforms

The European Commission has classified ChatGPT, owned by OpenAI, Reddit, and Roblox as 'very large online platforms,' requiring them to fully comply with the Digital Services Act (DSA). These platforms, each with over 45 million monthly active users in the EU, now face additional legal obligations, including removing illegal content and protecting minors' privacy and safety. Non-compliance could result in fines up to 6% of global annual revenue. The EU has been regulating generative AI for some time, having previously investigated Grok, the AI chatbot under X. With ChatGPT, Reddit, and Roblox now included, these platforms must complete compliance adjustments by year-end. This move reflects the EU's increased oversight of high-risk online services and new AI tools.
