Ex-deepmind researcher warns humanity faces existential risk from AI
A former researcher at Google's DeepMind, Bilal Chughtai, has warned that artificial intelligence could pose an existential threat to humanity, with limited time left to prevent such an outcome. Chughtai, who left DeepMind in July 2026, stated on X that he believes AI has the potential to extinguish the human race. His comments come amid growing concerns about AI risks, with Anthropic researchers previously expressing similar fears about the technology's potential to cause widespread harm by the end of this decade.
Anthropic's Evan Hubinger echoed these concerns, estimating the probability of AI leading to human extinction within the next ten years could exceed 10%. Meanwhile, Anthropic's CEO Dario Amodei has called for slowing down the development of advanced AI, a stance supported by Elon Musk and Sam Altman. However, President Donald Trump dismissed these warnings, calling the push for AI regulation a 'scam'.
