David Lawrence, a former Harvard Law student, has founded Blue Voice, an AI startup that provides real-time legal guidance to police officers. After dropping out of law school following an on-campus shooting involving a police officer, Lawrence co-founded Blue Voice with Amit Patankar and Michael Gropman to address the issue of policing errors due to lack of instant access to department rules. The company, based in Boston, has raised $6 million in funding led by SignalFire and Las Olas VC, and is now used by officers in 225 county agencies across 25 states. Lawrence explained that traditional methods of accessing legal protocols were inefficient and error-prone, with officers often relying on memory or generic tools like ChatGPT. Blue Voice, trained on department-specific laws and protocols, offers instant access to detailed legal information, enabling officers to make informed decisions. The platform also provides real-time school maps during emergencies. Lawrence noted that the tool has helped prevent incidents like a kidnapping and ensured compliance with legal procedures, leading to a 11-fold increase in customers over the last year. Lawrence, who previously worked for Connecticut Governor Ned Lamont, emphasized the importance of properly deploying AI to enhance public safety without compromising civil rights, amid growing scrutiny of police use of AI technologies.
