FBI officials have warned that artificial intelligence is significantly enhancing the capabilities of malicious hackers, urging organizations to prioritize fundamental cybersecurity practices. Jason Bilnoski, deputy assistant director of the FBI’s cyber division, emphasized that AI is enabling adversaries to launch more frequent and sophisticated attacks, with the speed of vulnerability discovery forcing organizations to patch systems more often. Bilnoski noted that while AI is being used by both nation-state and criminal actors, many attacks can still be prevented by adhering to basic cybersecurity hygiene, such as multifactor authentication. Colleen Ferranti, assistant section chief, highlighted the need for continuous, risk-based patching rather than quarterly updates, stressing that systems must adapt to the rapid pace of AI-driven vulnerability detection. The FBI’s new cyber strategy, set to be released Wednesday, outlines plans to deploy AI tools for threat detection, malware analysis, and victim support, while also focusing on improving victim relief and justice. The strategy reflects existing practices but places a stronger emphasis on protecting victims’ privacy and data, as well as expanding the ICS Coordinator program.
