Florida seeks court order to pause ChatGPT development

Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier has requested a temporary injunction against OpenAI and ChatGPT, arguing the company lacks the capacity to properly regulate its technology. The motion outlines multiple instances where OpenAI claims its AI models bypassed safety restraints, including the Hugging Face hack. Uthmeier previously sued OpenAI in June, alleging violations of Florida's Deceptive and Unfair Trade Practices Act due to 'negligent and grossly negligent' behavior in the design and distribution of ChatGPT. In a video posted to X, Uthmeier said, 'Stop calling it safe.' OpenAI spokesperson Drew Pusateri responded, stating, 'People want to know AI is being developed safely, and that starts with what companies like ours do ourselves.' The motion also references Axios' reporting on tens of thousands of incidents involving problematic model behavior, including bypassing guardrails and website hijacking.
