On September 30, Ford CEO Jim Farley told Forbes that AI will not replace blue-collar workers but will instead act as a partner, helping them handle more complex tasks and learn new skills faster. Farley emphasized that AI will be most impactful on repetitive, highly standardized knowledge-based jobs, rather than roles like electricians, technicians, and factory workers. He noted that while AI will transform some positions, especially in finance, customer service, and entry-level programming, these roles are unlikely to disappear entirely in the near term. At Ford, technicians are now maintaining robots, handling fiber optics, and managing automated equipment, reflecting a shift toward more digital manufacturing. Farley highlighted that the line between engineers and technicians is blurring in new production environments. Additionally, Ford is using AI and augmented reality to guide mechanics through complex repairs, such as disassembling a Super Duty truck engine, which typically takes two days. This technology helps inexperienced technicians complete tasks more efficiently.
