Tian Keyu, a former ByteDance intern who was dismissed in 2024, is launching an AI startup focused on world models. His company, which has not yet revealed its name or product, has secured nearly $30 million in funding from top venture capital firms, including Five Sources Capital and IDG Capital, with a post-money valuation of $200 million. The startup aims to compete with AI pioneers like Fei-Fei Li and Yann LeCun by developing models that simulate real-world physics for applications in robotics, interactive video, and autonomous driving. Tian, who graduated from Peking University with a master's degree last summer and is now a doctoral student, previously published a paper at NeurIPS 2024 that introduced a more efficient image generation method. He admitted to wrongdoing during his internship at ByteDance, where he was dismissed for allegedly interfering with another intern's work. A court ruled he breached his contract and ordered him to pay 500,000 yuan. Tian's startup is developing a symbolic language system with 200,000 unique symbols to help AI process video content. He plans to release a full model by 2027 and is currently focusing on technical development rather than consumer products or business models.
