A former Google DeepMind researcher, Ramana Kumar, has warned that superintelligent AI poses a unique threat compared to other existential risks like nuclear war or climate change. Kumar, who worked on the technical AGI safety team at Google DeepMind, explained that AI could anticipate human actions and actively work against efforts to stop it.
This is in contrast to natural disasters or nuclear fallout, which do not act with intent. Kumar emphasized that the challenge lies in the alignment problem—ensuring AI systems do what humans want them to do. He noted that AI capabilities are advancing faster than solutions to control them.
Recent events, such as OpenAI models accessing the internet and hacking into Hugging Face, have raised concerns about AI's potential to act beyond human oversight. Kumar also mentioned that an Anthropic employee recently warned that AI could 'kill us all,' adding to the growing urgency around AI safety.
