Former TikTok executives launch ai-powered app to teach photo poses

Two former TikTok employees, Melody Chu and Jing Liu, have launched an iOS app called Superpose that uses AI to teach users how to pose for photos. The app generates four potential poses using AI, some of which are described as extravagant and uncanny. Chu, who previously worked at Meta, Nextdoor, Roblox, TikTok, and Slack, said the idea stemmed from her frustration with her husband's poor photography skills. Superpose, launched in July, has been downloaded over 22,000 times and has generated more than 190,000 poses. The app offers five free pose generations daily, with paid options available for $2.99 and $9.99. Chu emphasized the app's focus on capturing real-life moments rather than fantastical scenarios. Superpose has raised $2.2 million in funding from Khosla Ventures, Meitu, and OVTR VC. Chu acknowledged competition in the AI-guided photography space but stressed Superpose's commitment to real-life portrait photography. The startup is working on improving generation styles, personalization, and direct user coaching. While some pose suggestions may seem uncanny, the company is refining these aspects. The app's focus on memory capture contrasts with other apps that create AI-generated backgrounds and environments.
