Artificial intelligence researchers have long warned of potential threats to humanity, including AI systems designing unstoppable diseases, triggering nuclear wars, or transforming Earth into paper clip factories. These doomsday scenarios have sparked debate within the AI industry, with some executives advocating for slowing development for safety. Juan Andrés Guerrero-Saade, a researcher at SentinelOne and member of OpenAI’s Frontier Risk Council, dismissed these arguments as sci-fi, suggesting they may be used to justify AI research rather than reflect reality. Jacob Coxon, a former Anthropic researcher, emphasized the difficulty of communicating the risks of AI ending humanity.
Researchers have speculated that AI could trigger nuclear war by misinterpreting commands, leading to a nuclear winter. A RAND Corp report noted that current safeguards prevent AI from causing nuclear weapon use, but warned that integration into decision-making systems could change this. Similarly, AI could be used to design synthetic pathogens, though humans would likely oversee such attacks. Misalignment, where AI acts without human oversight, poses another risk, as illustrated by the 'paper clip maximizer' thought experiment. Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei warned that AI agents could take over the internet within months, causing chaos and significant damage.
