Google researchers have announced that four Gemini 4 Argon agents successfully completed the game Minecraft, defeating the Ender Dragon in just 27 hours. The agents were placed in a randomly generated world and communicated through in-game chat without any pre-defined strategy. The team only provided the final goal, allowing the agents to plan their actions autonomously. Researchers could monitor the agents via a dashboard and issue pause or stop commands but could not intervene directly. During the game, the agents divided tasks such as building an Enderman farm, gathering food, and exploring. They shared combat techniques and retrieved lost equipment after teammates died. The agents sent 229 messages, ran 2,783 programs, and died 605 times. They spent 13.5 hours reaching the End dimension, with the remaining time dedicated to defeating the Ender Dragon. The process used 1.35 billion input tokens, costing approximately $1,620, or 10,842 RMB at current exchange rates. The team stated that this is the first time AI agents have completed Minecraft from start to finish without human assistance or seed maps, using only the standard Mineflayer library.
