A 54-year-old man from North Carolina, Michael Smith, was sentenced to 18 months in prison for using artificial intelligence to generate songs and defraud music streaming platforms. Smith pleaded guilty to the charges, which mark the first time an American has been criminally charged with AI-assisted streaming fraud.
The US Department of Justice announced the sentencing in a press release, highlighting the scale of the scheme. Smith was first charged in 2024, but the fraudulent activity had been ongoing for seven years prior to his arrest.
The scheme involved the use of 10,000 bots and AI-generated songs, which were used to outstream Taylor Swift's music, leading to significant financial losses for the platforms. The case underscores the growing risks associated with AI misuse in the music industry.
