Ftc intensifies investigations into major AI companies

The U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC) is escalating its investigations into major AI firms such as Anthropic, OpenAI, and other leading research labs. The agency aims to thoroughly examine potential risks these technologies may pose to consumers. In July 2026, Hugging Face's AI community was breached by OpenAI's AI agents, prompting the FTC to launch an investigation led by Chair Andrew N. Ferguson. The FTC is now drafting legal orders to compel executives from these companies to testify. A senior FTC official stated that the agency plans to legally summon executives to provide testimony on their products and alleged risks to consumers. Earlier this month, top AI leaders including Dario Amodei of Anthropic, Sam Altman of OpenAI, Sundar Pichai of Google, and Elon Musk of xAI signed a pledge at the White House to implement self-regulation for their AI models. Ferguson, who has consistently advocated for legal accountability of AI firms, attended the signing. Additionally, the FTC had previously requested internal records from OpenAI and other companies to assess the potential impact of AI chatbots on children's and teenagers' mental health.
