Gates foundation commits $1 billion to advance equitable AI development

The Gates Foundation has pledged to invest at least $1 billion over the next two years to promote fair and inclusive AI development. The initiative aims to ensure AI benefits people globally, particularly those who are currently underrepresented. The foundation also released its tenth annual 'Goalkeepers Report,' titled 'Creating Change - AI, Equity, and Urgent Choices,' urging stakeholders to act to prevent AI from exacerbating inequality. The report highlights three key areas for addressing AI equity: supporting all languages, developing tools based on local data, and investing in talent and accessibility. The $1 billion will be allocated to education, health, agriculture, and digital infrastructure, with 40% each going to education and health, 10% to agriculture, and 10% to digital infrastructure. The foundation emphasized that AI's success should be measured by its ability to help those in need, not just by commercial value.
