German military officials are assessing 30 artificial intelligence tools to enhance battlefield decision-making, with plans to deploy the system starting in 2027. Rear Admiral Thomas Dom, commander of the German Cyber Command, told the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung that a prototype system is expected by the second quarter of 2027, with full deployment anticipated by 2028. The initiative follows the increased use of drones and satellites in the Russia-Ukraine war, which has generated vast amounts of battlefield data requiring rapid analysis. Most of the AI tools under review are developed by German companies, with French firm ChapsVision being one of the few foreign contenders. Dom also noted that Germany does not plan to adopt Palantir’s Maven system, a widely used AI tool in the U.S. and NATO, due to concerns over reliance on American technology and data sovereignty. Palantir’s Maven system is already in use by the U.S., NATO, and several allies to improve situational awareness and accelerate decision-making. However, some European nations have expressed reservations about its deployment, citing fears of over-dependence on U.S. technology. These concerns have been exacerbated by past statements from former President Donald Trump suggesting a potential withdrawal from NATO, which has led some European countries to question the reliability of their American ally.
