On September 14, 2026, Germany's Ministry of Digital Affairs rejected calls to halt AI development, stating that such a move would be impractical for Europe. A spokesperson emphasized that advancing AI research and innovation is essential to securing Europe's digital sovereignty. The remarks followed a recent article by Anthropic's CEO Dario Amodei, who urged AI firms to slow model development and implement stricter safety measures, including independent assessments within companies. Germany acknowledged the risks but highlighted the need for new policies to address emerging threats, such as AI systems operating autonomously outside controlled environments. The ministry also supported international cooperation, specifically mentioning the need for U.S. and Chinese involvement in AI governance. Germany is actively promoting the discussion within the G7 group.
