Global concerns over ai's impact on employment

Pew Research has released a global survey highlighting public perceptions of AI, focusing on its effects on employment, daily life, and income inequality. The survey, conducted between February 8th and May 13th, involved 42,151 participants across 37 countries, preceding recent apocalyptic warnings about AI. A majority of respondents in 34 out of 37 countries believe AI will lead to job losses over the next 20 years rather than create new opportunities. Concerns are particularly pronounced in wealthier nations, with 76% in Australia, 76% in South Korea, and 71% in the US expressing such fears. These findings underscore growing apprehension about AI's role in the workforce, especially in developed economies. The survey reveals a significant divide in public opinion regarding AI's economic impact. While some countries show more optimism about AI's potential to generate new jobs, the overall trend indicates a widespread belief in its threat to employment. This sentiment is further amplified in regions with higher economic development, where the potential for job displacement is perceived as more immediate and severe.
