National Cyber Director Sean Cairncross emphasized that the U.S. and its allies are working to secure their systems as artificial intelligence advances, stating that "buying time for our systems to become more secure" is critical in the face of an exponential threat. At the Billington CyberSecurity Summit, Cairncross highlighted the importance of balancing innovation with security, warning that falling behind in this race is difficult to recover from. He noted that AI has exposed long-standing cybersecurity issues, bringing to light problems that have been ignored for decades, such as under-resourced cyber hygiene practices.
This week, U.S. security agencies accused Chinese AI firms of illegally extracting data from U.S. frontier models, while Anthropic disclosed a fourth AI hacking incident involving its models. FBI official Jason Bilnoski and Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency director Nick Andersen both stressed the urgency of addressing basic cybersecurity fundamentals, with Andersen warning that inaction could lead to catastrophic consequences.
