Google AI has introduced EnvHarness, a programmable layer that transforms static agent environments into adaptive training worlds. The tool allows LLM agents to learn more effectively from interactive environments by dynamically adjusting the training process. EnvHarness wraps existing environments with plug-in components that modify the episode start, agent actions, and observations without altering the underlying simulator or tasks. This approach is designed to address the limitations of static environments, which fail to adapt to an agent's evolving capabilities.
The research team tested EnvHarness across five benchmarks in four domains, reporting significant improvements in performance. Skills gained through this method showed gains of up to 9.0 points on held-out tasks with a 9.8% reduction in execution steps. The tool is available under the Apache-2.0 license and supports six environments, with a new benchmark interface that requires only a resettable environment.
EnvRigger, an automated tool within EnvHarness, identifies flaws in policy rollouts and generates components to address them. The system is policy-agnostic, allowing for flexible and efficient training. The paper highlights that EnvHarness outperforms domain-specific generators, demonstrating its potential to enhance the adaptability and effectiveness of AI training environments.
