Google assistant phased out, gemini to replace IT on android devices
Google has announced that the Google Assistant on Android phones will be gradually phased out starting September 4, 2026, with users being transitioned to the Gemini AI model. The migration process is expected to take several weeks, with some users possibly facing brief delays, but all will eventually lose access to Google Assistant. Originally planned for the end of 2025, the discontinuation was delayed to allow further improvements to Gemini, which Google now believes is ready to fully take over.
The shift affects more than just smartphones; smartwatches, earphones, and Android Auto will also transition to Gemini, as these devices rely on phone-based intelligence. Most Google smart home devices have already been migrated, while Android TVs, set-top boxes, and cars with built-in Google services remain unaffected and will receive system upgrades later, with specific dates yet to be announced.
Older devices that do not meet Gemini’s minimum requirements, and regions where the service has not yet launched, may still have access to Google Assistant for a while. However, most users are expected to lose access within the next one to two months.
