Google has introduced an upgraded version of its SynthID tool, which now includes a SynthID Detector. This tool helps identify AI-generated media by detecting watermarks embedded in images, videos, and audio files. The expansion covers content from OpenAI, NVIDIA, Kakao, and soon Apple. SynthID, launched in 2023, has watermarked over 180 billion images and videos, as well as 240,000 years of audio content. The SynthID Detector is accessible via synthid.com, where users can log in with Google, Apple, or ChatGPT accounts and upload media files for analysis. The tool identifies whether content contains a SynthID watermark and if it is designated as AI-generated. It is important to note that the Synth, ID Detector does not detect AI-generated content without a SynthID watermark. The SynthID Detector is not an AI detection tool but focuses on identifying watermarks embedded by specific AI models. Users should be aware that it cannot detect AI-generated content that lacks these watermarks. Matt Binder, a tech journalist at Mashable, covers AI and related technologies, highlighting the importance of such tools in the evolving landscape of AI detection.
