Google Labs has introduced Playground, an AI-powered game-creation platform that enables users to build browser-based games using simple text prompts, eliminating the need for coding expertise. Available to users aged 18 and older in the U.S., Playground allows creators to select genres, define game mechanics, and choose visual styles, with the option to upload visuals for AI transformation into game assets. Games can be played on mobile and desktop, shared via links, or published to the Explore gallery, supporting features like leaderboards. Google plans to integrate Unity Spark in a future update, enhancing 3D capabilities and professional game mechanics. The platform is part of a growing trend of AI-assisted game development, following Roblox’s Build feature launched in July. Google’s initiative aligns with its broader gaming interests, including past ventures like Stadia and YouTube Playables. Access to game generation is managed through a weekly token system, with higher limits for Google One AI subscribers. Playground’s launch reflects the company’s ongoing efforts to make game development more accessible, leveraging AI to lower entry barriers for creators without traditional skills. The platform’s availability is set to expand to additional countries, with free browsing and game access for all users.
