Google has released a public website that enables users to verify if media, including images, videos, and audio clips, are generated by artificial intelligence. The tool, called SynthID, was initially made available to journalists, media professionals, and researchers at Google I/O last year and is now accessible to the general public. SynthID, introduced in 2023, is used by Google’s models such as Nano Banana, Veo, and Lyria, as well as tools like Gemini, Flow, ProducerAI, and Vids, to watermark AI-generated content. OpenAI, Nvidia, and Kakao also support SynthID, with Apple expected to add support soon. Google has integrated SynthID into the Gemini app and Google Chrome, with over 1 million daily verification requests. While Microsoft and Meta have their own watermarking standards, these tools are not perfect, often failing to detect content generated by their own models. The tool supports a wide range of formats, including JPG, PNG, MP4, and WAV, among others. Google emphasized the importance of verifying AI-generated media as the technology becomes more prevalent. The company’s initiative aims to enhance transparency and trust in digital content.
