Google mandates AI integration in search for schools to maintain access to platform
Google has announced a significant shift in its educational offerings, stipulating that K-12 schools must opt-in to AI tools, such as those in Gemini and NotebookLM, starting next year if they wish to retain access to Google Search. This policy follows consultations involving educators, researchers, and policymakers.
Chris Phillips, vice president for education at Google, confirmed that Search and AI are fundamentally intertwined; should a school restrict AI usage entirely, students will lose access to the search engine. This forces institutions to accept the AI features if they want to keep using Google Search, despite some teachers' reservations about AI Overviews.
This development occurs alongside the introduction of Guided Learning in schools, a tool unveiled earlier this year designed to foster deep understanding rather than just providing direct answers. Google stated its aim is to give school leaders control, promising more details in the coming months before the transition begins.
