Google restricts access to gemini models for free users

GoogleSource: The Verge - AI06/10/2026, 14:37
Starting October 9th, Google will limit free users of its Gemini AI models to the Flash Lite version. Previously, free users had access to Gemini Flash Lite, Flash, and Pro. Now, accessing the standard Flash model requires a $4.99/month Google AI Plus subscription. Additionally, the AI Plus subscription will no longer include Gemini Pro. Subscribers will receive an email notification about losing access to Gemini Pro. Post these changes, the top-tier Gemini Pro model and the 'Deep Think' advanced reasoning feature will be available only to Google AI Pro or Ultra subscribers. The updates mark a shift in Google's strategy to monetize its AI offerings, restricting premium features to paid users. The changes are set to take effect as of October 9th, 2026, aligning with the company's broader efforts to enhance its AI services through subscription models. The Verge reported the details of the changes.
