Google shifts focus from gemini gems to AI skills

Google is phasing out the Gemini feature known as 'Gems,' which allowed users to create custom AI assistants for specific tasks, in favor of a broader 'skills' framework. The transition, set for November 17, 2026, will automatically migrate existing Gems to the new format without requiring user action. Launched in 2024, Gems enabled users to build assistants for tasks like career guidance, coding, and travel planning, which could also be shared. Google notes that the former Gems will remain functional until the migration.
