Google CEO Sundar Pichai stated that AI still has a long way to go before it can achieve self-improvement. Pichai mentioned that while AI agents are now being used to assist in model development, the technology is still in its early stages. He emphasized that the concept of recursive self-improvement (RSI) remains far off, with AI currently working alongside researchers in a limited automated capacity. Pichai also noted that the percentage of code generated by AI is no longer a meaningful metric, as AI now deeply influences every line of code produced. Additionally, he highlighted that Gemini 4 Argon is helping developers tackle complex programming challenges, and that the number of times Google has had to roll back software to an earlier version has decreased by one-third.
