Google's gemini 3.8 flash model launches amid internal shifts and programming advances
Google is set to release its Gemini 3.8 Flash model, internally known as 'Skimaki,' on Wednesday, September 2, 2026. The model, part of the Flash series, is designed to be faster and more cost-effective than the Pro series but lacks the full parameter count of its more powerful counterparts. Internal testing showed engineers preferred Gemini 3.8 Flash over Anthropic's Opus model, indicating progress in closing the gap with competitors like OpenAI and Anthropic.
The release coincides with significant leadership changes at DeepMind, including the departure of Demis Hassabis from day-to-day management and the promotion of Koray Kavukcuoglu to senior vice president. Kavukcuoglu has emphasized the need for accelerated execution. Meanwhile, Google's Pro series models, including Gemini 4, are delayed, with some projects like 3.5 Pro abandoned due to insufficient improvements over the Flash series.
Google has increased its focus on reinforcement learning to enhance programming capabilities, and recently hired Barret Zoph, a former OpenAI researcher, as vice president of research to lead these efforts.
