Google's gemini 4 argon AI agents conquer minecraft without human intervention
Google DeepMind researchers announced that four Gemini 4 Argon AI agents defeated the Ender Dragon in Minecraft, marking the first time AI completed the game from start to finish without human assistance. The agents, operating on Easy difficulty, finished in 27 hours and 14 minutes, enduring 605 deaths. The achievement was documented in a research paper posted on October 15, 2026. The AI had access to hidden block knowledge and used optimal strategies learned during training. Google emphasized that the game ran on Easy difficulty, reducing monster damage, and that the AI’s performance does not reflect human capabilities, as the fastest recorded time for beating Minecraft is under seven minutes. The run cost approximately $520 in model usage at Argon’s introductory API price. Google noted that Minecraft is becoming a popular benchmark in AI testing, following recent community projects that also achieved the feat using other AI models like Anthropic’s Claude Opus 5.
The experiment highlights the growing trend of using video games as AI testing grounds, with Pokémon games previously leading this trend. Researchers observed the AI’s progress through a live dashboard but did not intervene, underscoring the agents’ autonomy. While the accomplishment is significant, it remains far from human performance, highlighting the challenges AI still faces in complex, dynamic environments.
