Healthleap secures $38m to enhance AI for hospital patient risk detection
Healthleap, an AI startup based in South Africa, has raised $38 million in seed and Series A funding to enhance its platform for identifying hospital patients at risk of undiagnosed conditions. The financing includes an $8 million seed round co-led by Sequoia Capital and First Round Capital, and a $30 million Series A led by Hummingbird Ventures. Founded in 2022 by siblings Jemima and Josiah Meyer, the company initially focused on clinical nutrition tools before pivoting to a broader platform for detecting conditions like malnutrition and delirium.
Healthleap’s platform, now deployed in over 50 hospitals, uses language models to analyze electronic health records and flag patients with risk factors such as recent weight loss or difficulty swallowing. The company’s CEO, Josiah Meyer, noted that its software highlights potential risks for further review rather than diagnosing patients. Healthleap claims its tools have delivered a 5x return on investment for hospitals, with one client reporting $23.8 million in annualized financial impact.
The startup plans to expand its capabilities to cover over 40 health conditions and enter outpatient and home care markets. Healthleap’s revenue has grown more than 10x in the past year, with customers including Penn Medicine, Cedars-Sinai, and Emory Healthcare.
