Hesai unveils 6d full-color lidar sensor, ending the 'line number arms race'
On October 21, 2026, Hesai Technologies announced the release of its next-generation 6D full-color LiDAR sensor, marking a shift away from the 'line number arms race' in the industry. The company claims its new sensor, based on the 'Picasso' chip platform launched in April 2026, aligns RGB color data with depth information at the chip level, providing consistent, reliable data for autonomous driving systems. This integration eliminates the need for post-processing fusion, reducing errors in spatial localization.
The sensor combines color, position, and distance data into a single pixel, enabling precise alignment of objects like road cones, children's bicycles, and pets, even when they occupy only a few pixels. This advancement addresses challenges in sensor fusion, where discrepancies between LiDAR and camera data can lead to decision-making uncertainties in autonomous vehicles. Hesai highlights that its approach simplifies the fusion process by eliminating the need for time synchronization and spatial calibration, which are common sources of data mapping errors.
