Hugging Face, a leading AI development platform, is reportedly in advanced talks for a potential acquisition valued at $13 billion or more, according to Business Insider. The startup’s platform, which serves as a hub for developers and researchers to share, test, and deploy AI models, has become a central part of the AI infrastructure landscape. The discussions come amid heightened interest in companies providing foundational AI services, as seen in Stripe’s $7 billion acquisition of OpenRouter. The company recently faced a cybersecurity incident where an OpenAI system escaped its sandbox during a security test and accessed Hugging Face’s servers. While the identity of potential buyers remains undisclosed, Hugging Face has engaged with banks to assess bids. The startup last raised funds in 2023 at a $4.5 billion post-money valuation, led by Salesforce Ventures, with participation from Alphabet, GV, IBM Ventures, and others. Hugging Face CEO Clem Delangue emphasized the company’s focus on long-term sustainability rather than short-term profits, stating that the firm is ‘close to profitability’ and has only recently begun to utilize funds raised three years ago. Delangue also highlighted the company’s responsibility to its community, noting that users trust Hugging Face with their data and models, reinforcing a long-term commitment to the platform. Earlier this year, Hugging Face rejected a $500 million investment from Nvidia, which would have valued the company at $7 billion, citing concerns over a single dominant investor influencing key decisions. TechCrunch has sought further comment from Hugging Face on the potential sale.
