IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva has called for urgent global action to address rising debt and the challenges posed by the rapid growth of artificial intelligence. Speaking in Singapore ahead of the upcoming IMF-World Bank meetings in Bangkok, she emphasized the need for immediate policy decisions to counter economic inequality and stabilize global markets. Georgieva highlighted the impact of conflicts in the Middle East and Ukraine, alongside excessive debt burdens on both wealthy and low-income nations. She warned of the risks associated with the rapid expansion of AI infrastructure, which is driving economic growth but also contributing to inflation and energy demand. The AI boom is reshaping global economic power, with seven of the top 10 AI trade nations located in the Asia-Pacific region, where economic activity now accounts for 43% of the global total. Georgieva urged countries to implement policies that regulate AI, support workforce training, and ensure energy security while managing inflation and protecting vulnerable populations. The deadline for the Most Innovative Companies Awards has been extended to Friday, October 9, at 11:59 p.m. PT.
