India's pocket fm achieves $500m revenue run rate with ai-driven content expansion
Pocket FM, an Indian audio storytelling platform, has doubled its annualized revenue run rate to $500 million over the past year, driven by AI-powered content creation. AI now powers 93% of the platform’s catalog and 99% of its new content, according to co-founder and CEO Rohan Nayak. The company uses AI to scale content production while retaining human creators for storytelling. Pocket FM’s AI tools focus on creative writing and text-to-speech, trained on years of production data. The technology has reduced content production costs by 80x, enabling 100 hours of content to be created in a day. The startup now produces 2.5 million hours of AI-powered content annually, up from 100,000 hours two years ago. Pocket FM’s 12-month revenue retention rate has risen to 76% from 44%.
The company’s revenue run rate climbed from $250 million to $500 million, with $85 million coming from ads and $415 million from subscriptions. Pocket FM has expanded into the U.S., U.K., Germany, and France, and its parent company, Pocket Entertainment, is exploring new entertainment formats, including AI-generated videos and books. The startup is profitable and generating positive cash flow but has no immediate plans for a public listing. It is in talks with investors about raising $100 million to $120 million at a $2 billion valuation.
