Instacart introduces AI assistant clementine to simplify grocery shopping
Instacart has launched Clementine, an AI-powered grocery shopping assistant designed to help users create personalized shopping carts based on conversations, grocery lists, or recipes. The tool allows users to ask for budget-friendly meals, high-protein dinners, or to order their usual items. Clementine also generates recipes, suggests dietary-friendly options, and identifies cost-effective alternatives. Chris Rogers, Instacart's CEO, emphasized the tool's role in solving the universal challenge of deciding what to cook for dinner. Clementine is now available in the U.S. and Canada. The move reflects a broader trend among delivery apps, including Uber Eats and DoorDash, to integrate AI assistants that help users plan meals and groceries, aiming to retain users within their platforms rather than redirecting them to external chatbots like ChatGPT.
The AI assistant can process handwritten or digital grocery lists, converting them into ready-to-buy carts. It also surfaces relevant deals and promotions. Instacart's initiative highlights the growing competition among delivery apps to become the default planning tool for households, competing not only on delivery speed and variety but also on the ability to assist with meal and grocery planning.
