Daniel Pinto, Vice Chairman at JPMorgan, cautioned that the valuations within the Artificial Intelligence sector remain excessively high, predicting a market pullback. Speaking during a panel discussion at the International Financial Leaders Investment Summit hosted by the Hong Kong Monetary Authority, Pinto acknowledged the significant potential for productivity gains and the major impact AI will bring.
However, Pinto stressed the need for caution regarding the pace of growth, noting that the massive investments currently underway require validation through substantial purchases from industries outside of AI. He suggested that market expectations for revenue and profit growth are overly steep relative to current stock prices, which could force a sector-wide repricing.
This sentiment aligns with observations from David Leibowitz, Global Market Strategist at JPMorgan Asset Management. Leibowitz noted in July that investors are becoming more discerning about the risks and rewards associated with AI. He pointed out that investors are now differentiating within the AI supply chain, assessing areas of potential oversupply versus those with sustained demand, moving beyond a simple buy-all-AI-related-assets mentality.
